Six months ago, Nike started an experimental tech program called Hyper Court. The aim was to build the world’s first Google tech-powered courts that can provide basketball training to kids with little access to coaches or the internet.
Just by pre-downloading and turning on the Hyper Court training app, users can learn the moves of NBA superstars LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving. No data connection is required once the app is downloaded.
Over the past months, the impact of the program has been monitored and the results have been extremely positive.
Completion rate is high and the number of active users is growing at a healthy rate. Word is, one user has even managed to join a pro league after undergoing the training.
The program shows that such an initiative could be a viable solution to develop the potential of players who might not be able to afford coaching due to financial constraints.
Nike chose the Philippines as the location for the first Hyper Courts because the country is one of the top basketball-loving nations in the world but yet has few coaches and data is costly.
However, there are plans for more Hyper Courts elsewhere around the world in future.
