Formica Group has just announced a wireless charging plan

Imagine this: You return home from work, groceries et al. in hand, and casually drop your phone on the counter. You put away the groceries, start cooking dinner, and by the time you’re ready to eat, your phone is fully charged. Sounds positively futuristic, no? Well, this might be closer to reality than you think. Today, Formica Group announced a partnership aimed at developing a wireless charging infrastructure to integrate into its commercial and residential surfacing systems.

“ConvenientPower Systems has the proprietary technology to deliver seamless wireless power, and Formica Group is known for innovations in surfacing design. Together, we look forward to bringing wireless charging solutions to market as partners and fellow members of the Wireless Power Consortium,” said Francisco Irazusta, CEO of Fletcher Building, Formica’s parent company, in a statement.

It’s oddly fitting that a company known for such a throwback look as laminate kitchen surfaces should be trailblazing in the technology arena; the aesthetics of the 1970s have seen a resurgence in fashion, art, and design, so who’s to say the era’s retro kitchen style shouldn’t make a comeback? Of course, Formica Group’s offerings today go far beyond your grandmother’s countertops; the company offers a bevy of surfaces for both commercial and residential use across its various brands.

Formica and ConvenientPower are aiming to roll out wireless charging options as soon as this year. Looks like laminate is making a comeback.
