Amazon and a manufacturer of garage door openers are rolling out a service to deliver parcels inside of customers’ garages, to help prevent porch piracy.
The service is going to be available in the second quarter to Amazon.com Inc.’s (Nasdaq: AMZN) premium Prime customers in 37 cities — including Sacramento.
Amazon and Chamberlain Group, an Oak Brook, Illinois-based maker of garage door openers, announced the new service at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week. Chamberlain makes garage doors under the brands LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Merlin, Grifco and MyQ, among others.
The Amazon service will work for any Chamberlain customer with myQ-connected technology. Customers with a myQ-connected garage door opener will be able to monitor and control their garage door from anywhere via the Amazon Key app, according to press releases from both companies. Representatives of the companies didn’t respond to calls for more information. Pricing of the Key app was not yet available.
The myQ deal is the latest in new features and products supported by Key by Amazon. Others include a front-door deadbolt lock with Wi-Fi connectivity from Schlage, and Key for Business, which is a fob that allows delivery drivers access to commercial and residential properties.
Key for Garage will be available in the U.S. in the second quarter, according to Amazon’s website. The Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt will be available in March for $249.99 or $299.99 when bundled with an Amazon Cloud Cam.
