Dr. Anthony Fauci gave Senate Republicans a dose of their own medicine Wednesday, repeatedly invoking the Fifth Amendment and declining to answer dozens of questions during a Republican-led hearing examining his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than five years after the pandemic upended the world, some lawmakers still appear determined to keep the blame game on life support. If congressional hearings burned calories, this one would have solved the nation’s obesity crisis.
Curiously absent from much of the discussion was former President Donald Trump’s own early response to the virus, including his repeated characterization of concerns about the pandemic as a Democratic “hoax” in the early stages and his public downplaying of its severity. Critics argue those messages undermined public confidence in the threat and contributed to confusion during a critical period, though the extent of their impact remains a matter of debate.
At this point, Washington seems less interested in preventing the next pandemic than in staging reruns of the last one. The virus may be gone from the headlines, but the political sequel just keeps getting renewed.
