St. Ann’s Reveals New Theater At Dumbo’s Tobacco Warehouse

Over the past two years, the 1860’s Tobacco Warehouse that sits in Brooklyn Bridge Park under its namesake bridge has been tangibly reimagined as a new home for avant-garde theater group St. Ann’s Warehouse. The $31.6 million renovation was officially unveiled with an on-site ribbon-cutting ceremony, and oh how the structure has transformed.

For starters, the Civil War-era warehouse is now enclosed for the first time in 40 years thanks to a topper of glass bricks and reflective mortar designed by renovation leader Marvel Architects. Marvel’s renovation preserves the Tobbaco Warehouse as relic by floating a new structure inside of its walls; the result is a theater that can transform its footprint to serve the needs of its resident company.

The major overhaul included creating a 10,000-square-foot open performance space with seating for 700, and a 7,800-square-foot open-air garden designed by Brooklyn Bridge Park landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates .
